USMMA Hosts Seamanship Trophy Presentation
The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy served as the site for the presentation of the 2001 American Merchant Marine Seamanship Trophy on Jan. 12.
For the first tine in its 40-year history, the trophy was awarded for extraordinary seafaring on the Great Lakes.
The captains of two vessels owned by Hannah Marine Corp. of Lemont, IL received the 2001 trophy during luncheon ceremonies at the Academy, which administers the selection process and presentation of the award.
The American Merchant Marine Seamanship Trophy was established in 1962 to recognize extraordinary feats of seafaring by American mariners. Since its inception, it has been awarded exclusively for outstanding seamanship in the deep-sea sector of the maritime industry. The recent award for an incident on the Great Lakes is a benchmark in the trophy's history.
In the early dark hours of Oct. 8, 2000, the tug Undaunted with a crew . of 11 and the work barge Pierre Marquette 41 in tow, encountered gale force winds, snow and 12-foot seas on Lake Michigan. The barge's cargo, which included 5,000 Ibs. of iron and several tons of industrial equipment, shifted in the heavy seas and dangerously upset the tow's stability.
The tug's crew performed an emergency breakaway, but a wave pushed the 400-foot barge into the Undaunted, ripping a hole in the tug's waterline. Hailing a "mayday" call, the tug pilot pushed his vessel aground. A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter eventually evacuated most of the crew, but the captain and the engineer of the Undaunted remained aboard in the pounding Lake waters.
Meanwhile, the Hannah Marine Corp. vessels Donald C. Hannah, commanded by William Mellicke of Chicago, IL, and James A. Hannah, with David Heim of West Islip, NY at the helm, set off to assist the Undaunted, despite the treacherous seas.
Donald C. Hannah located the runaway barge, which had drifted 24 miles from its release point. The crew skillfully connected a towline to
miles from its release point. The crew skillfully connected a towline to
the pitching barge, getting it in tow and eliminating its threat to public
safety.
Meanwhile, James A. Hannah, continuing to battle the storm, escorted the impaired Undaunted, now suffered overheated engines and hull damage, safely into port.
A U.S. Coast Guard report of the action said: "The crews of James A. Hannah and Donald C. Hannah performed courageously by rendering assistance to vessels that were in major distress despite the imminent threat to their own lives."
On hand at the Academy to receive the 2001 Seamanship Trophy were the Hannah Marine Corp. President Jeffrey Covinsky and Vice President of Operations Edward Hogan; Hannah Marine vessel captains Mellicke and Heim; and Thomas Orzechowski, Vice President of the Seafarers International Union with offices in Michigan.
Nominations for the Seamanship Trophy are solicited annually, but the trophy is only awarded if its selection committee determines that a nominee is worthy of special recognition. The trophy has not been awarded in some years. The trophy covers events in the previous calendar year; thus the 2001 award recognizes actions in 2000.
The trophy, an ornate sterling silver cup, is on permanent display at the American Merchant Marine Museum on the Academy's Kings Point, Long Island, NY campus.
